September, de Maand van de Mode! Ieder jaar tonen vele beroemde en ‘upcoming’ ontwerpers hun nieuwste collectie op de vele catwalks in Milaan, Parijs en Amsterdam. Maar wat dacht je van Lagos, Casablanca en Tbilisi? Dat de Fashion Weeks al lang geen Europees-Amerikaans feestje meer zijn, lees je in dit Wereldverhaal. 

Western magazines for young people like Dazed and Confused and I-D-Vice show shoots from around the world, and some of those titles also appear in countries like Nigeria.

Conversely, the ultra-hip Nigerian The Native Magazine is now available in London, Paris and NY, as well as many other fashion cities.

Also in the aforementioned Nigeria, where a fashion week has been taking place in the capital Lagos since 2011, as well as in Bogota, Sao Paolo, Jakarta, Fiji, Hyderabad, Seoul, Panama, Tbilisi, Casablanca. All are thriving fashion scenes.

And exciting things happen there. Things that we here in the Netherlands generally know little about, and that is of course a great pity.
If we look at the clothes kept in our museums through a different lens, we can review the history of fashion and our museums and enrich them with different knowledge and insights.

Perhaps it is time for “the West” to take that on board in its insatiable quest for innovation and creativity, after all, isn't that what fashion is all about?
