Use of our websites
We want to make the websites associated with the Wereldmuseum as accessible as possible for everyone and strive to achieve accessibility in accordance with the WCAG 2.2, level AA guidelines. Our websites have two important tasks:
- To enable visitors to purchase museum tickets and provide practical information about visiting the museum.
- To inspire visitors before or after visiting one of our museums.
How accessible are the websites?
The Wereldmuseum strives to make all our online services and information as accessible as possible, so that users with various disabilities, such as visual, auditory, motor and cognitive impairments, can also use our services without any problems. We therefore provide users with clear information about the accessibility of our service. A QuickScan has been carried out for various pages on Wereldmuseum.nl. The QuickScan is a limited investigation into the extent to which the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are met.
The pages examined do not yet comply with WCAG 2.2 level AA; several areas for improvement were identified during this investigation. At present, the website is therefore not (fully) accessible to everyone. People who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or have other functional impairments may have difficulty using the website. There is much to be gained for them by improving the accessibility of the website.
Parts of the websites that are not yet fully accessible are listed below:
Observable
- Lack of correct alternative text for images.
- Lack of subtitles for videos.
- The heading structure is inconsistent.
- The colour contrast is sometimes insufficient.
Operable
- Keyboard navigation does not work well everywhere
- There is no visible focus indicator
- Automatic carousels cannot be paused
- Some navigation elements do not have clear labels
Robust
- Interactive elements lack correct ARIA attributes, preventing screen readers from communicating status updates
What are we doing to improve accessibility?
The Wereldmuseum is currently working with our digital partners and internal teams to make our websites (pages, content, functionalities, design) more accessible. A number of important improvements are planned for the third and fourth quarters of 2025. In addition, the Wereldmuseum is conducting research for a revamped website. All improvements that cannot yet be made will be included in this. Implementation is planned for 2026.
This statement was drawn up on 2 June 2025.
