Workshop Zari

The attire of this Rajput bride and groom exudes luxury. The intricate Zari embroidery, crafted with gold thread on fine silk, showcases exceptional craftsmanship. The red color signifies bridal wear, though in this community, brides also wear vibrant yellow and orange shades. Jewelry plays a crucial role in bridal attire, serving as a proud reference to the traditional royal North Indian identity, which has evolved into a popular genre. Depending on the length of the wedding ceremony, a bride changes her outfits and/or jewelry multiple times.

Metres of silk, lace, or organza, lavishly embroidered with gold thread, silk yarns, or intricate techniques, sometimes fully adorned with rhinestones, genuine Swarovski crystals, pearls, and sequins. Flowers hold great significance in Indian wedding ceremonies, symbolizing love, beauty, fertility, and spiritual purity.

During the workshop, under the guidance of Katja van der Steen, you will create a floral motif from an Indian bridal dress using the Zari technique.

Katja van der Steen is a master tailor with extensive expertise in custom tailoring, men’s clothing, and pattern drafting, developed during her studies at the Master Tailoring School in Amsterdam. She specialises in historical cuts, theater and ballet costumes, and artisanal tailoring, refined through projects for the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia.

As a true textile enthusiast, Katja is dedicated to preserving and promoting craft techniques. She shares her passion for handwork—from embroidery to traditional tailoring and textile processing—through both in-person and digital workshops and lectures.
