What is Wereldmuseum Junior?

Wereldmuseum Junior is our label for all kid-friendly offerings at Wereldmuseum—specifically for children up to 12 years old. From exciting stories to creative workshops: here, experience the world together.

At Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, there’s plenty to see and do for young and old. Enjoy a fun and inspiring day out in Rotterdam together. Whether you're joining a creative workshop, listening to a story, or learning a new technique in our Atelier—at Wereldmuseum, you learn by doing. Especially for families, there’s the unique Junior exhibition – Superstraat! Here, children don’t just look—they touch, try things out, and participate. This brings the world to life in a way that stimulates the senses and sparks curiosity.

Celebrate your birthday

Not everyone celebrates the same holidays, but we all celebrate! Discover the similarities and differences between celebrations around the world, such as Lunar New Year, birthday parties, and Raksha Bandhan. How do you celebrate? During the guided program, you’ll make a netsuke (a Japanese belt knot) and the Brazilian treat brigadeiros. The birthday child gives out a gift to their guests for Raksha Bandhan.

The history of Wereldmuseum Junior

Did you know Wereldmuseum Junior is the oldest children’s museum in the Netherlands? It was founded in 1975, making it the oldest of its kind in the country and one of the oldest in Europe. Wereldmuseum Junior is known for its engaging museum concept (see, touch, experience, and participate) and aims to encourage an open view of the world. Through visiting the museum, children discover how inspiring and enriching it is to be open to others.

Wereldmuseum Junior was previously called Tropenmuseum Junior and since 2023, it has adopted the new name. And that’s not all—because all three museums (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Leiden) now share the same name, you’ll find Wereldmuseum Junior at all these locations. More fun at more locations!

Wereldmuseum Junior in education

What do visitors think?

Great and interactive for children: you can draw, listen, read, play with Lego, and climb through secret passages. And there are lots of friendly staff members.
