Christmas Holiday 2025

Decorate the world with your Christmas creations!

Celebrate the holidays creatively at Wereldmuseum Rotterdam! This Christmas break, children can make their own Christmas tree ornaments and wrapping paper in the museum. Starting Saturday, December 20, daily from 12:00 to 16:00, you can join creative activities in the Atelier and Winston’s Party Kitchen in Superstraat.

Please note, the museum will be closed on Thursday, December 25, 2024, and Thursday, January 1, 2025.

Make Your Own Straw Christmas Decorations

Create ice stars or Christmas angels using straw — a natural material traditionally used for making baskets and festive decorations around the world. After the harvest, many cultures used straw in winter to craft ornaments. In Mexico, people make Nacimiento nativity scenes or decorate home altars with angels. In Scandinavian countries like Finland, the Julbock (Christmas goat) is a popular tradition. In Germany, families make ice stars for their Christmas trees.

Join us in Winston’s Party Kitchen to learn how to make your own straw Christmas decorations.

Open daily from 12:00–16:00, Location: Winston’s Party Kitchen, Drop-in activity (subject to availability), Age: 6+

Workshop: Make Your Own Wrapping Paper

Looking for a creative activity this Christmas holiday? In this workshop, you’ll make colourful wrapping paper using the Japanese technique orizome — a combination of folding and dyeing. Fold the paper into different shapes, dip it into coloured ink, and discover surprising patterns with every creation.

This one-hour workshop is suitable for both children and adults — perfect for curious hands and creative minds. Everyone leaves with a stack of handmade wrapping paper, ideal for wrapping Christmas and New Year’s gifts in a unique way. Want to continue experimenting? A free online activity shows you how to turn your paper into a small booklet at home.
