Exhibition Remix Rotterdam

Remix Rotterdam is the meeting place of two Rotterdam-based museums: Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the World Museum. Both are inextricably bound up with Rotterdam, sharing audiences, patrons and benefactors. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which first opened its doors in 1849, has focused since its inception on collecting and displaying western works of art and objects. The World Museum, founded in 1885, concentrated particularly on cultural goods from Asia, Africa and the Americas. 

This exhibition mixes it up, bringing together objects from all over the world – objects whose origins stem from the meeting of peoples and cultures. Remix Rotterdam freely associates on the basis of four different kinds of encounter: universal and artistic encounters, trade relations and colonial interactions as they were experienced in the colonial era. Each encounter brings objects and artworks together that combine to tell a story. The Rotterdam-based artist Paul van der Eerden was invited to trace the interrelations between the museum collections from a personal perspective. His intuitive encounters result in surprising combinations and links. 

Now Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is shutting for renovations, it is lodging parts of its collection with neighbouring museums – an ideal opportunity to combine collections for the first time in a unique remix.
