Bigi Kayman

Colonialism and Rotterdam includes a thematic space based on the story Op de rug van Bigi Kayman [‘On Bigi Kayman’s Back’] to facilitate discussion of the colonial past through language, song and stories.

Hedy Tjin and Henna Goudzand Nahar wrote the book Op de rug van Bigi Kayman to help adults discuss slavery with kids. They link the well-known Surinamese song Bigi Kayman, which lots of kids learn at primary school, with the history of the Brooskampers, a group of Maroons in Suriname. They fled the plantations before 1740 and built a new life in Kaaimangrasi. The Wereldmuseum and the makers of the book invite adults to use it to discuss slavery, resilience and freedom with kids in a special space. They are also prompted to consider what history they will be passing on.
