Autumn Half-Term 2025

Autumn half-term 2025

Are you looking for a fun outing with the children this autumn half-term? From 11 to 26 October, there is plenty to see and do at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam! During the autumn half-term, the museum is open every day, including Mondays.

CELEBRATION! WORLDWIDE: Día de Muertos

Welcome to Winston’s Party Kitchen! Celebrate Día de Muertos from 11 to 26 October 2025.

Each year in Mexico, a vibrant celebration takes place called Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). People believe that during this time, the dead briefly return to the world of the living. On 1 November, deceased children are remembered, and on 2 November, adults. Families visit cemeteries, clean and decorate graves with flowers and candles, and bring food and music to celebrate together.

Create Mexican Calaveras for Día de Muertos

Try your hand at metalworking and craft your own tin skull. During Día de Muertos, colourful skulls and skeletons—known as calaveras—are seen everywhere: on graves, in homes, and on altars. They are part of the celebration and symbolise life after death. Want to make your own calavera? Visit Wereldmuseum and create your own tin skull this half-term.

Atelier: Daily from Saturday 18 to Sunday 26 October 2025

Craft with (Fruit)Leather. Learn the basic techniques of tooling (stamping) and braiding leather, and create your own accessory. This half-term, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam Atelier focuses on leatherworking. Be inspired by a handcrafted Moroccan leather bag with fringes, featured in the exhibition Kruispunt / Crafting New Narratives. Participants aged 6 and up will learn basic leatherworking techniques—tooling and braiding—under guidance. Patient participants may also try embroidery on leather. You’ll leave with a unique accessory, such as a keyring or bracelet.

Duurzaam alternatief: fruitleer

Sustainable Alternative: Fruit Leather

The leather industry has a significant environmental impact. The Rotterdam-based company Fruitleather Rotterdam has developed a sustainable alternative: fruit leather, made from mango waste from the Rotterdam harbour. Use this eco-friendly material for your accessory while supplies last.
