Made In China
A culture of making, past and present
Made in China is currently showing at Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. In this exhibition, the museum explores the past and present of ‘the act of making’. Making has existed as long as humans have walked the planet, and is inextricably linked to what it means to be human. It is how we reflect on and shape the world around us. Made in China takes China as a case study for a new perspective on the act of making. With a mix of objects, art, fashion, photographs and videos, the exhibition showcases China’s culture of making, which is both ancient and very much alive today. It also explores the various meanings of ‘making’ through the lens of contemporary artists and designers like Cao Fei, Chen Hangfeng, Susan Fang, Jing He, Ma Ke, Li Xiaofeng and Yang Yongliang who, besides being makers, also reflect in their work on various aspects of making.
